Chlamydia

Chlamydia is a common sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis. It can infect both men and women and can cause serious, permanent damage to a woman's reproductive system, potentially leading to infertility. Chlamydia can also cause a potentially fatal ectopic pregnancy (pregnancy that occurs outside the womb)....

Chlamydia

What are the symptoms of chlamydia?

  • Abnormal vaginal discharge
  • A burning sensation when urinating
  • Pain during sexual intercourse in women
  • Testicular pain in men
  • Rectal pain, discharge, or bleeding
  • In some cases, it can be asymptomatic (no symptoms)

How soon after exposure should I get tested for chlamydia?

Testing for chlamydia is recommended if you have symptoms or if you have a sexual partner who has tested positive. Generally, it’s advisable to get tested 1-2 weeks after potential exposure to ensure accurate results. If the test is negative, it should be repeated following a period of 3 months, as chlamydia can sometimes take longer to become detectable.

What is the treatment for chlamydia?

Chlamydia is usually easy to treat with antibiotics. The most common treatments are a single dose of azithromycin or a week of doxycycline taken twice daily. It’s important for all sexual partners to be treated simultaneously to prevent reinfection. Abstaining from sexual intercourse until the infection has cleared (usually about a week) is also advised.

How can I protect myself from chlamydia?

The best way to prevent chlamydia is to abstain from sexual activities or be in a mutually monogamous relationship with a partner who has been tested and is known to be uninfected. Use of latex condoms every time you have sex can greatly reduce the risk of contracting chlamydia. Regular STI screenings are also important, especially if you are sexually active with multiple partners or have new partners.
