What is Blood Typing?
Human blood is primarily classified according to the ABO system, which divides blood types into four groups: A, B, AB, and O. These groups are determined by the presence or absence of specific antigens on the surface of red blood cells. Knowing your blood type is crucial, especially in the case of blood transfusions, as an incorrect match can lead to serious complications.
How GetTested's Blood Type Test Works
GetTested's Blood Type Test is based on a solid-phase method where a blood sample is applied to the test cassette. The test uses monoclonal antibodies (anti-A and anti-B) that are immobilized on the test pad. When the blood comes into contact with these antibodies, a reaction occurs if the corresponding antigen is present. This results in the agglutination of red blood cells, which is displayed as a red signal on the test cassette. A positive result indicates the presence of a specific blood type, while a negative result shows that no reaction has occurred.
