Instructions

Before taking the test

  • We recommend that you have been exposed to the foods included in the test within the last three months, before taking the test.
  • Your test ID must be registered before it is sent for analysis (otherwise the lab will not analyze the test).
  • We recommend that you take the test on an empty stomach in the morning.
  • We recommend that you submit the test for analysis on a Monday or Tuesday.
  • If tracking code is available, please attach it to the front of the envelope (found on your test ID card).
  • Before you start, you need to register your test. Your test kit contains a sticker with your unique test ID. Register your test ID at my.gettested.io.
  • Wash your hands in hot water for about a minute. This will increase blood circulation in your fingers. Dry your hands. Doing a blood test without stimulating blood circulation might prove difficult, so please do not skip this step.
  • Disinfect your “test finger” with the supplied disinfectant paper. Wait a few seconds until the finger is completely dry.
  • Rotate the protective cover on the blood lancet to remove it. Use the extra lancet if you need to do another finger prick.
  • Place your hand on a flat surface. Put the lancet diagonally toward the test finger and press down the button. Make sure the lancet is pressed against the finger the whole time.
  • We recommend that you stand up at this stage to let the blood in your arm flow downward. Help the blood drops come out by massaging the finger toward the needle stick.
  • Drip the blood onto the circles on the paper. Standing up will help. It is important to fill all the circles completely, otherwise the lab will not be able to complete the test.
  • Place the sticker with your unique test-ID onto the paper. Wait 2 hours for the blood to dry.
  • When the blood has dried for 2 hours, put the paper in the plastic cover it arrived in.
  • Put the plastic cover in the enclosed envelope and send it the same day (preferably a Monday or Tuesday).

Are pet allergies common?

Pet allergies are more common than you would think. About 10-20% of the world population has some type of allergic reaction to pets. People with other allergies or asthma are more prone to get pet allergies. Cat allergies are more common than dog allergies, as cat allergens are very sticky.

I found out I’m allergic, but I want to keep my pet. What should I do?

It is understandable that it can be difficult to part ways with your pet after finding out you are allergic. If you or any other household members want to keep the pet, there are some ways for you to live together and keep your symptoms at a minimum.

  • Assign your pet to a few rooms only. Don’t keep it in your own bedroom.
  • It’s best to not pet or hug your cat or dog, but if you do, you should thoroughly wash your hands afterwards with soap.
  • After spending time with the pet, change your clothes or take a shower.
  • Ventilate the room. Air purifiers can reduce the allergen levels.
  • Vacuum the house often to keep the house clean and remove allergen. When cleaning, it’s best to wear gloves and a mask.
  • Don’t let the pet sit on fabric furniture.
  • Give your pet a bath at least once a week. Use a pet-friendly shampoo. Preferably have a non-allergic person bath and brush the pet.
  • If you have a cat, there is now the option to buy allergen-reducing cat food. One such product is Purina Pro Plan LiveClear.

Is there a medical treatment for pet allergy?

The doctor may give you medicine to treat your allergy symptoms with antihistamine. Any asthma symptoms can be relieved by means of an inhaler. Discuss with an allergist what treatment would suit your needs best.

What is immunotherapy and should I get it?

Immunotherapy is a treatment that helps the body build tolerance over time. The body is exposed to small doses of the allergen. Immunotherapy should be considered when any medicine or other treatments are dissatisfactory.

  8. Amelia

I never imagined myself writing a review for a pet allergy test. But when recurrent sneezing and a runny nose became my new normal after adopting my cat, Luna, I knew I had to do something. Searching for solutions, I stumbled upon the GetTested Pet Allergy Test. Skeptical yet hopeful, I ordered the kit. 🙂 The test kit was dispatched quickly, and its user-friendliness impressed me. The instructions were lucid and direct, making the collection process stress-free. I mailed my sample and waited, albeit impatiently. In a surprisingly short time, the results landed in my inbox. 🙂 🙂 Not only was I enlightened about my cat allergy, but the report also detailed other pet allergies I could potentially have. This was an unexpected bonus, preparing me for any future pets I may consider. Furthermore, the report was articulate, segregating allergies based on severity, and provided advice on managing them. While I learned that my reaction to Luna wasn’t severe, it made a significant difference in understanding the root cause and finding solutions. Now, armed with information, I’ve made changes to my living environment, ensuring both Luna and I can cohabit harmoniously. Grateful to GetTested for bridging the knowledge gap and helping me make informed decisions. 🙂 🙂

  9. Sofia Bennett

Pet lovers will understand the heartache of suspecting an allergy to their beloved fur companion. When I adopted Rusty, my golden retriever, little did I expect the bouts of itchy eyes and sneezing that ensued. Distraught, I looked for answers and found the GetTested Pet Allergy Test. From the outset, the professionalism of GetTested was evident. The kit’s packaging, the simplicity of the process, and the swift turnaround time for results were commendable. But what truly sets this test apart is the comprehensive nature of the report.

To my surprise, while I did exhibit a mild allergy to dog dander, the report identified other potential triggers, including allergies to certain bird feathers – something I’d never have guessed. This revelation proved invaluable as it reshaped my understanding and gave me a clear direction on how to create a healthier environment for both Rusty and me. To anyone suspecting a pet allergy, this test is not just a diagnostic tool; it’s peace of mind. Knowledge is empowering, and I wholeheartedly recommend GetTested for providing clarity in such a sensitive area. 🙂

User-friendly and comprehensive, the test not only identified my mild rabbit allergy but also offered management advice. An excellent resource for multi-pet owners looking for clarity. 🙂
