GetTested’s DHEA Tests analyses the levels of DHEA in saliva. Too low levels of DHEA can cause symptoms such as fatigue, depression, low libido and obesity, while too high levels can lead to symptoms such as PCOS, acne and hair loss. If adrenal fatigue or hormonal imbalances are suspected, it is recommended to measure the levels of DHEA because low levels of DHEA are common in chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS).

Customers frequently opt to combine the DHEA test with the Cortisol test for a balanced assessment of stress and hormone levels.

What is DHEA?

Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), also known as androstenolone, is a pro-hormone that the adrenal glands produce. It converts into the hormones oestrogen and testosterone. Tired adrenal glands or low hormone levels often lead to DHEA deficiency. Typically, our bodies reach peak DHEA production around age 20, and then this production gradually declines. Consequently, many consider DHEA a rejuvenating hormone, helping us maintain youth.

DHEA, as a pro-hormone, significantly affects the balance of oestrogen and testosterone. Thus, if you suspect hormonal imbalances or adrenal fatigue, measuring DHEA becomes essential.

For those seeking a thorough evaluation of hormones and adrenal glands, we provide specific tests. Our Men's Hormone Test and Women's Hormone Test go beyond DHEA to also assess cortisol, oestrogen, progesterone, and testosterone.

Common Symptoms of Low DHEA:

  • Fatigue or low energy
  • Depression
  • Panic attacks
  • Low libido
  • Overweight
  • Osteoporosis
  • Dry skin

Common Symptoms of High DHEA:

  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
  • Hair loss
  • Acne
  • Sleep disorders
  • Irritability or anger

DHEA Levels: Too Low or Too High

Adrenal fatigue, chronic fatigue syndrome, Addison's disease, or pituitary insufficiency are often associated with low DHEA levels. In contrast, high DHEA levels might indicate PCOS, breast cancer, adrenal tumours, or Cushing's syndrome.

How Does the DHEA Test Work?

You can easily do this saliva test at home. It requires two samples on the same day: one immediately upon waking and another 30 minutes later. After collecting the samples, you send them to our lab for analysis. We ensure you receive your results quickly and digitally.

FAQ

How is the DHEA test carried out?

Our DHEA intolerance test is a home test kit. After ordering, we will send you a kit with everything you need to collect a saliva sample. Then, simply return your sample to us in the pre-paid envelope.

Who would benefit from testing their DHEA levels?

Testing DHEA levels in saliva is beneficial for those experiencing symptoms of hormonal imbalances, such as fatigue, decreased libido, or mood swings. It's also useful for individuals concerned about aging-related health issues or adrenal health.

What happens if I fail to take the sample?

If you read the instructions carefully before you take the test and it should go well. Should something go wrong, you are welcome to contact us and we will help you.

How quickly will I receive my results?

Once we receive your sample, average response time is 10-15 business days to receive results.

When should I take the test?

Collect the first saliva sample upon waking up, and the second sample 30 minutes later.

What is the difference between DHEA in saliva and DHEA-S in blood?

DHEA Testing: Saliva tests for DHEA can be more reflective of immediate, bioavailable hormone levels, which might be more relevant for understanding certain conditions such as adrenal function, stress response, and ageing. DHEA-S Testing: Blood tests for DHEA-S are often used in diagnosing and monitoring various health conditions, including adrenal gland disorders and, in some cases, ovarian and testicular function.
